Kiwis shocked by 'criminal' price of supermarket 'protein pot'

“These really are the most trying of times."

A Kiwi Reddit user has shared what might be the most unhinged example of a cost-of-living pinch that we’ve seen in a hot minute - and it’s got people scratching their heads.

The photo shows a wee plastic container labelled as a ‘Egg & spinach protein pot’, going for an eye watering $4.50.

Inside is a pretty lacklustre snack of... wait for it... two boiled eggs and four rogue baby spinach leaves.

FOUR. TINY. LEAVES!!

Not even any seasonings. Just two humble eggs and a garnish that looks more like an afterthought.

My most rogue of girl dinners are looking at this pot in shock horror.

“These really are the most trying of times,” one commenter wrote.

“You should ask the staff for an ingredient list for dietary reasons,” another joked.

“Hey man, four leaves of spinach are definitely $2.50 😂,” Added a third.

Someone else reckoned: “This should be a crime,” while another chimed in: “2 eggs, phew. I thought that was gonna be a rip-off for a second.”

Now, to be fair, boiled eggs are a solid on-the-go snack, and the convenience is worth something in itself. But those sad spinach leaves reeeeally push the audacity.

One user even pointed out you can buy a whole carton of a dozen eggs for $6.50 - so you can understand why there are a good few people who reckon this is a classic case of daylight robbery.

Maybe the real value is actually in that plastic packaging…

Either way, this “protein pot” might go down as the most painful $4.50 ever spent.
