Slowly, post by post, my Instagram and Tik Tok algorithms have become llittered with grown ass adults unboxing one of the ugliest key chain doll things I’ve ever seen: A thing called a Labubu.
If you live under a rock, Labubu is a monster elf collectable toy made by Hong Kong Artist Kasing Lung. You don’t know which one you’re getting, and there are 300 different kinds.
It’s supposedly more than a toy - It's a collectable fashion phenomenon, and each one costs about $107 here in NZ.
But here's the thing about the stupid Internet - the more I see them, the more I hate them, the more I feel enraged. But then, I find myself looking at them online, adding to cart and then upper-cutting myself for wasting $107 on a key ring and throwing away my phone.
The repetition builds reputation. The more we see, the more we think we should have it.
And why are all these very hip people buying these toys and putting them on their designer handbags? I saw one TikToker put it on a Birkin Bag, a bag worth a minimum of US$10,000!!!
WHY WOULD YOU RUIN YOUR $10K+ HANDBAG WITH A MONSTER ELF?
There needs to be some form of meditation available for trend rage - it must exist, right? Why does it make me so mad?
Is it the environmental impact of everyone buying these toys they’ll throw out in a year? I mean no, I just thought of that now and wanted to sound cool. It's a great thought, but it’s more that I’m just being hater.
So for those of you that also find yourself getting mad with a $107 doll key ring, say this to yourself:
My day will not be ruined by a Labubu. They do not actually make me feel mad, they are bringing people joy, if it brings them joy, let them have joy - but for the love of Beyoncé, don’t get sucked in and waste your money on one.
