Two otter cubs have been rescued after being found huddling for warmth inside a car engine in North Ayrshire, Scotland.

Residents in the village of Skelmorlie became concerned after spotting the adorable young animals several times on Friday.

The cubs - both female and believed to be around nine or 10 weeks old - were eventually removed from the vehicle after a group of locals intervened. With the animals cold and exhausted, a local resident took care of the pair overnight before handing them over to the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

SSPCA experts believe the cubs - named Valentine and Juliet - as they were found just before Valentine's Day - were unlikely to have survived much longer on their own.

They are now recovering in the care of the SSPCA.
