Scotland fans have been drinking so much beer during the World Cup that some Boston bars have reportedly run dry.

More than 20,000 Scottish supporters have travelled to the US for Scotland's opening matches, and it sounds like they've been making the most of the trip both on and off the pitch.

Several bars around Boston have reported huge spikes in business over the past week, with some even needing emergency beer deliveries just to keep up with demand.

The Samuel Adams Downtown Boston Taproom said Scotland fans drank four times as much Boston Lager over a four-day stretch than they would during a typical busy holiday weekend, 7 News Boston reports.

The venue sold more than 3,000 pints and staff were left dealing with around 70 empty kegs by Monday morning. That's a fair amount of admin.

Other bars across the city have reported similar scenes. Henessy's Bar said business after Scotland's match against Haiti was three times bigger than what they normally see on St Patrick's Day.

"We've been here for over 30 years and we've never seen anything like it," chief operating officer Noelle Somers told the Boston Globe.

At The Dubliner, staff said queues were forming before the doors had even opened.

"Before we even opened on Saturday, there was a queue down the block already," a worker told 7News Boston. "It was nonstop open to close. The Scottish, they just don't slow down at all, you know?"

To be fair, the locals don't seem to mind. Scotland fan Chris Loughlin said Boston had welcomed them with open arms.

"The guys in Boston are brilliant," he told the news source. "They've embraced us, the police are amazing. Everyone's been very kind."

If Scotland keeps progressing through the tournament, Boston's pubs might want to start ordering a few extra kegs now.
