Sam Smith confirms engagement to Christian Cowan

Sam Smith is set to tie the knot with Christian Cowan.

The singer-songwriter, who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, and the fashion designer were first linked in December 2022.

In May, Sam sparked engagement rumours when they wore a yellow diamond ring to the Met Gala, and in an interview for The New York Times published on Tuesday, the Stay with Me hitmaker confirmed the happy news.

And during the conversation, the Lay Me Down star revealed that the title of their upcoming fifth studio album, Hazel Eyes, was inspired by the 32-year-old and is about "requited love".

Meanwhile, the track Everlasting Love is about the night before Sam's first date with Christian.

"For me, there's something radical about being queer in this time, in this world, and singing love songs," the 34-year-old commented to the outlet. "I'm not going to allow the poison that I read and that I see to affect my way of loving."

Elsewhere in the chat, Sam recalled how they recorded the vocals for new song Oh Mother several times in the studio.

"(The track was) the biggest hill and monster of a song to climb," they remembered, adding that they have grown used to changes in their voice: "You hear life within the instrument."

Hazel Eyes is set to be released on 21 August. It serves as a follow-up to 2023's Gloria.
