Salmon sperm skincare: Sharyn investigates the how, why and what the hell?

Every single person I’ve spoken to about it has the same question...

Salmon sperm - celebrities are going nuts for it. We’re talking Jennifer Aniston, The Kardashians, Charli XCX, and Miley Cyrus.

It’s WILD.

I wanted to know what exactly salmon sperm is and what the actual benefits are.

What is salmon sperm?!

So, doing my research, I found out that when you go to buy salmon sperm products, they call it Salmon DNA… because it sounds much nicer than going, “Hey, do you have the salmon jizz stuff I can whack on my face?”

…Because that’s exactly what I did.

It’s also called PDRN, which, to be honest, also sounds better than, ahem, salmon sperm.

So, what are the benefits of PDRN or your salmon sperm? Salmon DNA is great for deep skin healing and calming. It helps with redness, pigmentation, hydration, and fine lines - especially if you do microneedling at home. Some people even refer to it as 'Botox in a bottle'.

How do they get the sperm from salmon?

Every single person I’ve spoken to about salmon sperm has the same question. Is it somebody’s job to walk through all the salmon, lined up, and… give a little hand action?

This is a very important question because, seriously, how much sperm can one salmon give? And while it’s a pretty wild mental image, a factory where people are just, you know, wanking salmon all day is NOT the case.

Don’t for one second pretend it didn’t cross your mind. I know it did.

It’s a byproduct of salmon fishing. To collect the salmon sperm, they first gut the salmon like you’d see in a normal fish dissection. They collect the immature sperm from the testes of the salmon, then purify it.

The raw sperm is processed in labs, the DNA is isolated, and it’s highly purified to remove proteins, toxins, and anything else that could irritate your skin.

Do salmon sperm facials actually work?

So does it actually work? And what should you be looking for? I give all the deets on the latest episode of 'A Little Bit Extra', but in short: yes!

However, no one in New Zealand currently does in-clinic salmon sperm facials. As far as I can tell, there aren’t any injectables available here - it’s only topical products.

The most popular PDRN salmon sperm serum and products I could find are by a brand called Medi Cube, ranging from $27 to $45.

The serum I bought was $42. There’s also one you’ll see a lot on TikTok with little capsules you rub on your face until they explode - yep, the people behind that brilliant idea are basically laughing with us at how it works.

There’s also a whipped cleanser face wash, which is an… interesting experience to rub on your face.

I’d love to know if you’ve tried these and whether you found them effective.

Honestly? Looking at my friends’ faces, I’m willing to chuck some sperm on mine and see what happens.
