Super Rugby fans in New Zealand are set to experience ‘Super Weekend’ for the first time ever on our soil.
A common event across both the NRL and Super Rugby, it’s one weekend where all teams play in the same location, bringing fans together for one massive weekend of Rugby.
Until now, ‘Super Weekend’ has only been hosted across the ditch in Melbourne.
However, Christchurch’s brand-new stadium, Te Kaha, is set to host the event over ANZAC Weekend next year - from April 24 to 26.
While the venue is still under construction, ‘Super Weekend’ is expected to be the stadium’s first major event.
“Super Round 2026 will combine world-class rugby with live music and family-friendly fun, as fans from across New Zealand, Australia, Fiji and the Pacific come together to celebrate a historic festival of footy in Christchurch,” a press release read.
The stadium is set to be packed out with 25,000 seats under a fixed roof, in the city centre, with Super Rugby saying “the stadium is the perfect venue for three days of entertaining rugby.”
Fans are pumped, with one commenting: “We will be there no matter what.”
“In NZ too.. Excellent,” another added.
After 14 years in their makeshift home at Apollo Projects Stadium following the earthquakes, the Crusaders will finally move into a purpose-built stadium.
Super Rugby confirmed the Crusaders will be the first team to run out onto the new pitch, saying: “The opening act of Super Round on Friday 24 April will feature hometown heroes and defending champions the Crusaders.”
They also revealed: “The following day, the competition’s burgeoning Anzac Day rivalries reignite as the Hurricanes face the ACT Brumbies for the Captain Shout Cup, and the Blues take on the Queensland Reds, with the players competing for the Sellars Dixon Medal.”
The event will continue until Sunday with a double-header feature, rounding out one massive weekend in the new stadium.
The full draw for Super Rugby is set to be released later this week, but if this is anything to go by, next year is looking massive for footy fans.
