World's fastest 80-year-old? Rod Stewart reveals quest to break the 100m running record

From rock star to track star.

Sir Rod Stewart may have a raspy voice, but his lungs are apparently made of steel. This revelation comes as the singer announced his goals to become a record holder for the 100m dash.

He aims to be the fastest 80-year-old sprinter.

These breaking plans were set into motion after the singer contracted COVID-19 last year and had to cancel his shows.

To whip his body back into shape, he began training at the private track at his estate.

In a recent interview with AARP Magazine, he said, “I got it down to 19 seconds by learning how to push off.

“I’m going to try and do 17 seconds, which I think is a world record for an 80-year-old.”

The current world record for the age group actually appears to be 14.21 seconds, but if Sir Rod trains hard enough, surely he can shave a few more seconds off and get the gold.

No stranger to the fitness lifestyle, the 'Maggie May' singer has played football his whole life, has a long-time personal trainer, and does plenty of underwater activity to help with body and vocal health (as once suggested to him by Frank Sinatra).

“He [Frank] once said to me, ‘Rod, the secret to being a great singer is having powerful lungs. Do lots of underwater swimming, where you hold your breath'."

So, while he’s no Usain Bolt, Sir Rod is still in impressive form for an octogenarian.

Set to perform at the 2025 Glastonbury Festival at the end of next month, he may have to put his 100m dreams aside for a little while.

But while he gears up for that, we’ll be patiently awaiting a record-breaking run from the singer.

We’ll cheer him on in all his endeavours, whether it be as a rockstar or as a track star.
