Rev Run and Russell Simmons have announced the death of their older brother, Daniel Simmons Jr.
In a statement issued via social media on Monday, a spokesperson for the Simmons family shared that the artist-philanthropist had passed away. He was 72.
"It is with a profound sense of loss that we honor and celebrate the life of Danny Simmons Jr., a beacon of love and creativity," a representative wrote. "He was not just a brother, father, uncle, grandfather, and loving husband; he was a vibrant artist, dedicated supporter of creatives, and a cherished friend. Though he has transitioned from this world, his legacy of kindness, generosity, and artistic brilliance will forever shine brightly in our hearts."
A cause of death wasn't disclosed.
Later, Run-DMC star Rev Run - born Joseph Simmons - reposted the sad news to his Instagram page.
And Def Jam Recordings co-founder Russell posted a heartfelt tribute to Danny in which he described his sibling as the "true artist in the family".
"Joey and I went into music - him as a poet and rapper, me as a producer - but Danny was the one who created from the deepest place," he mused. "His poetry, art, and ideas shaped how we think and gave us the freedom to dream beyond limits. He cared deeply about the underserved communities of color and encouraged us to give back."
In addition, Russell recalled how he and "best friend" Danny spoke "every day".
"He taught me how to be a better human being and how to be a man," the 68-year-old added.
Meanwhile, Russell's ex-wife, Kimora Lee Simmons, honoured the Def Poetry Jam co-creator by sharing a slideshow of throwback photos.
In the accompanying message, the model-entrepreneur thanked the artist for always supporting her and her daughters, Ming Lee, 26, and Aoki Lee, 23.
"You were always kind, warm, caring, loving, and good to me. No matter what happened or where life went, you were like a dad to my girls and to all my kids," she recounted. "And you never wavered. You had so much love to give and give it you did! You were creative and talented, but most of all you were truly a good man. Your compassion for others and your generosity with your time and your spirit and your love was felt by every person who ever met you. My girls will forever cherish their bonds with you and will carry your love forward forever. As will I. I will always love you for how you loved my girls."
Danny is survived by his wife Keia and son Jamel.
