Red Hot Chili Peppers bass wizard Flea has once more ventured out solo, releasing an 8-minute track, ‘A Plea’.
The kicker? It’s full-blown jazz.
Now, don't be surprised. Jazz has always been in his blood. The trumpet was one of the first instruments Flea learnt, so this tune is a "return to his first musical instrument and love".
His first notable solo release was his 2012 'Helen Burns' EP, which is described as 'avant-garde jazz/nu jazz/jazz fusion.'
Because he’s Flea, the video also features him doing interpretive dance like he’s trying to summon a weather system - it’s a ride.
He handled the bass, trumpet, and vocals himself, then roped in a bunch of heavy-hitting modern jazz musicians, including Anna Butterss, Deantoni Parks, Mauro Refosco, Rickey Washington, Vikram Devasthali, Chris Warren, and Josh Johnson.
The track is the first taste of a full solo album arriving in 2026.
The lyrics hit harder than you might expect from a bloke rolling around on a studio floor: “Yearning for a place beyond, a place of love, for me to speak my mind and be myself. I’m always just trying to be myself.”
Flea explained in the same press release that he doesn’t “care about the act of politics”, saying he believes in a “much more transcendent place” where real conversations can “actually help humanity” and help us live “harmoniously and productively”.
There’s a place where we meet, and it’s love.
Fans are lapping it up too.
“I’m so happy Flea exists,” was the top comment on his music video.
“When you know you needed something but didn’t know what, this shows up,” was another.
And, as one fan put so simply: “Art is not dead.”
Love to see Flea still doing whatever the hell he wants. Great tune, mate.
