Featured Guest: Portia Woodman-Wickcliffe

Fresh off the Women’s Rugby World Cup and featured on the cover of October’s issue of The House of Wellness magazine, Portia Woodman-Wickcliffe joined Mike to reflect on her rugby journey.

Portia expressed pride in how far women’s rugby has come but acknowledged there’s still room for growth, especially around funding and support.

“The game has changed completely and I’m grateful for it,” she said.

“It allows you to grow in an amazing environment with like-minded people, people who want to be the best version of themselves.”

“Whether that’s rugby or netball or cricket or soccer, everybody’s on the same pathway… you’re surrounded by girls who just want you to be you.”

“As a mum now, I have a 13-year-old daughter [and] I want her to experience as many sports as she can,” she finished.

With the World Cup behind her now, Portia said she is most excited to just be a wife and a mum.

“I get to be there for my wife… and help her to be the best version she can be.”

“And my daughter’s going into high school next year [so] I’m really excited that I can be there for probably the most important time of her life.”

Featured Guest: Nadia Lim

Beloved chef and television personality Nadia Lim is back with her latest cookbook, Nadia’s Farm Kitchen, which is also a TV series.

The book is a heartfelt collection of over 90 recipes, many inspired by her life on the farm where she and her family live and grow their own produce.

In addition to delicious recipes, it features personal stories of her journey, from the challenges of farming to the joys of raising animals and growing food.

Nadia said that after living out on the farm, it would be hard to live in the city again.

“I feel like maybe I’ve always been more of a country girl at heart, even though I grew up in the city,” Nadia admitted.

“I'm showing my bias here, but I reckon growing up on a farm is a really good way to get some sort of grounding in life.”

Featured Guest: Irene Van Dyk

Irene Van Dyk, a former Netball International who represented both New Zealand and South Africa, has transitioned into an ambassadorial role for the Aramex Kiwi Walk and Run Trail Series.

With 145 senior appearances for New Zealand and titles from the 2003 World Netball Championships, 2006 and 2010 Commonwealth Games, Irene’s journey post-retirement has been anything but slow.

She’s passionate about promoting fitness to all ages, working as Participation Manager for Netball New Zealand and encouraging others to take part in the Aramex Walk Run series.

“With walk and run, you can take your time,” Irene explained.

“I run when I want to forget stuff and I walk when I want to mull over things and enjoy nature.”

Editor of The House of Wellness Magazine: Vanessa Marshall

Vanessa popped in to chat to Mike about the latest edition of The House of Wellness magazine, featuring Portia Woodman-Wickcliffe on the cover.

The edition also highlights Dame Lia Carrington’s beloved dog Collins, who stars in his own calendar raising awareness for Kiwi safety.

She says that food lovers will enjoy vegetarian recipes with a twist from Gretchen Lowe, alongside smoothie tips from Rachel Grunwell for making delicious, nutrient-packed drinks.

Resident Pharmacist: Piyara Perera

This week, Piyara explained the benefits of vaporisers, which combine the best features of both humidifiers and diffusers.

Unlike cool mist humidifiers, vaporisers use heat to create warm steam that adds moisture to the air, easing breathing, soothing dry skin and relieving nasal congestion and persistent coughs.

They're also effective for asthma and allergy sufferers as the warm steam helps reduce irritation in the nose, throat and lungs.

She advises monitoring humidity levels to maintain a comfortable environment between 30-50%.

Check out our extended chat with Portia here, and be sure to tune in next Sunday from 8 am for The House of Wellness on The Breeze.
