Well, this’ll make you feel both nostalgic and slightly attacked. Pixar just dropped the first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5, and your favourite animated toys (that made you ugly cry as an adult during To) are now facing their biggest threat yet – technology.

The film brings back the OG crew – Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz (Tim Allen), and Jessie (Joan Cusack) – but throws them into a world where playtime looks very different from the one we grew up with. The biggest curveball? Lilypad, a high-tech frog-shaped smart tablet voiced by Greta Lee (Past Lives, The Morning Show). It's basically every parent’s nightmare toy they swear they'll never give to their children (until they do).

Watch the trailer below:

It’s a pretty bang-on reflection of how childhood has changed over the years. Back in the day, a cardboard box was a fort. Taking a palstic maccas trays down the slides was playground nirvana, and a blade of grass clamped between your thumbs was hours of whistling entertainment (or was that just me?). Nowadays, it’s an iPad with a YouTube Kids tab. Pixar’s leaning straight into that shift, exploring what happens when imagination meets the algorithm – and how the old-school toys cope when they’re suddenly outdated.

Conan O’Brien joins the cast as “Smarty Pants”, a toilet-training tech toy. Expect sarcasm, slapstick, and probably an emotional gut punch disguised as a kids’ joke.

Behind the scenes, Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, WALL·E) takes the director’s chair, co-directed by Kenna Harris and produced by Lindsey Collins. Basically, it’s Pixar royalty so the flick should be in great hands.

So yeah, Toy Story 5 might just hit a little differently. It’s still about friendship, loyalty, and growing up – only now it’s asking what happens when “playtime” needs a Wi-Fi connection.

Toy Story 5 is expected to be released in cinemas on June 19, 2026.
