A Central District paramedic is putting in the hard yards, walking 190 kilometres from Ōtaki to Dannevirke to raise money for burned-out emergency workers.

The man behind it is Chuck, and he’s doing it properly. On foot, in uniform, carrying a response kit, stopping at every ambulance station along the way. That includes Levin, Foxton, Palmerston North, Feilding and Pahiatua, before finishing up at the Dannevirke Ambulance Station.

The walk is fundraising for Te Kiwi Māia, an organisation that supports first responders and Defence Force personnel dealing with burnout, fatigue, and physical or psychological injury. It’s a cause that’s personal for Chuck.

After years working as a paramedic, Chuck experienced burnout himself and took part in a week-long wellbeing retreat through Te Kiwi Māia. That time helped him recover and reset, and now he’s giving back in the only way that feels right to him, by doing the hard yards for others.

In an update posted in early December, Chuck confirmed the walk is very much still happening, with training underway and plans locked in for late May.

“We are over 25% to the goal with close to 5 months until the walk begins,” he wrote. “Dates planned for 25th to 29th of May subject to change depending on multiple factors.”

He also plans to open registrations for anyone keen to join walking groups or offer support along the way, adding that every donation helps, no matter how big or small.

It’s all about backing the people who show up on our worst days, and making sure they’re looked after too.

At the time of writing this article, $1,730 has been raised so far, with a goal of $5,000. If you’re keen to donate, you can check out Chuck’s GiveALittle here
