South Auckland is about to glow like never before. After a two-year break, the Ōtara Block Christmas lights are back, and locals are buzzing to show off their festive flair.

Started six years ago to bring a Franklin Road-style spectacle closer to home in South Auckland, the community-led event sees streets across Ōtara decked out in lights, with neighbours coming together to make their corner of the city shine.

This year, it’s bigger than ever - Clayton Avenue and surrounds are joined by Hamill Road, giving visitors even more magic to explore.

Visitors can expect twinkling lights, live entertainment, and street kai, all wrapped up in the spirit of manaakitanga. As co-organiser Swanie Nelson puts it: "While the lights are of course the main focus, this event has grown to become so much more than that. It's truly about the connection and joy that comes from doing this alongside our fellow neighbours."

Volunteer organiser Lee Naniseni says the effort has been massive but worth it: “We're incredibly proud of what our neighbourhood has created here, and we hope it inspires other communities to see what's possible when people come together.

Now we're excited to welcome whānau and friends from all across Tāmaki Makaurau to join us.

Perfect for whānau nights out, casual strolls, or quick selfies with the lights, the festival makes it easy to get into the Christmas spirit. Parking info, updates and yum-looking menus from the food on offer are all on the event’s Facebook page.

Sounds like Ōtara’s glow-up is not to be missed this festive season! They're on now until Christmas Day, from 7.30 pm –11.30 pm. And if you're looking for even more Xmas goodness, check out our full list of Santa Parades around the motu here
