Another day, another New Zealander killing it on the world stage. Our very own Kate Hawley just took home the Academy Award for ‘Best Costume Design’ for her work on the movie ‘Frankenstein’, which stars Jacob Elordi and Mia Goth.

“On behalf of myself and the amazing team I work with, the artisans, the alchemists, the dream weavers, we thank the Academy for recognising our crafts,” she began.

While thanking a long list of her fellow crew, Kate struggled to fight back tears.

Adding some classic Kiwi humour in the mix, she thanked her family for “putting up with all of my sh**”.

“I’m so grateful, thank you so much for recognising our craft,” Kate ended her big winning speech.

The designer boasts an incredible film portfolio, working as a costume designer on blockbuster hits such as ‘Crimson Peak’, ‘Pacific Rim’, and ‘Suicide Squad’.

Born in Wellington, Kate studied at Wellington Polytech and Motley Theatre Design and worked in the theatre and opera.

This isn’t Kate’s first win for ‘Frankenstein’. Last month, she took home the BAFTA for ‘Best Costume Design’ where she tearfully thanked her friends and family.

Frankenstein received a solid nine nominations at this year’s 98th Academy Awards, including in the big ‘Best Picture’ category.

Other nominations include: ‘Best Makeup and Hair Design’, ‘Best Original Score’, Best Sound’, Best Costume Design’, ‘Best Cinematography’, ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’, ‘Best Supporting Actor’ and ‘Best Production Design’.

We love to see a Kiwi up on the world stage, and Kate is definitely one we’re proud to see representing Aotearoa.
