Most Olympic post-race interviews stick to thanking their supporters, but Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid had other plans, confessing to cheating on his girlfriend on live TV.
After winning bronze in the 20km biathlon at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Anterselva, Italy, the 28-year-old used his live interview with Norway’s NRK to confess that he had cheated on his girlfriend. On television. To the world. And, thanks to the internet, the rest of us too.
Standing at the finish line on February 10, Lægreid quickly became emotional as he explained why recent months had been tough.
“Half a year ago, I met the love of my life, the world’s most beautiful, finest person,” he said, according to an NRK transcript translated by Google Translate. “And three months ago I made the biggest mistake of my life and cheated on her.”
He went on to say the guilt had affected his Olympic build-up, adding, “I had a gold medal in my life, and I am sure there are many people who will see things differently, but I only have eyes for her.”
Lægreid did not name the woman involved but confirmed he told her about the infidelity last week. When asked if he had considered what she might think hearing this on live TV, he replied, “Maybe I ruined myself now to get her back.”
Jeez. Athletes overshare sometimes, but confessing relationship drama mid-Games is next level.
Whether it helps him off the track is another question entirely. But as far as unforgettable Olympic interviews go, this one is going straight into the hall of fame.
