Move over, dystopian dramas and superhero franchises; the internet’s newest obsession is a college hockey romance, and no, we’re not talking ‘Heated Rivalry' this time.

‘Off Campus’ has officially become a global streaming addiction, and honestly, the numbers are kinda insane.

The show pulled in 36 million viewers in just 12 days, making it the third biggest debut in Prime Video history. The only shows that had a bigger launch were 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' and 'Fallout'.

That means ‘Off Campus’ is outperforming massive shows like 'The Boys', 'Reacher', and 'The Summer I Turned Pretty'.

Which, if you think about it, is pretty wild for a hockey romance book adaptation.

It gets crazier, people… among women aged 18–34, ‘Off Campus’ is officially Prime Video’s biggest debut EVER.

BookTok girlies... we absolutely won this one.

For anyone who somehow hasn’t heard of it yet, ‘Off Campus’ is based on the insanely popular book series by Elle Kennedy that dominated romance TikTok years before the show even existed.

Each book follows students at Briar University, with book one (Season 1 of ‘Off Campus’) focused mainly on Hannah Wells (Ella Bright) and Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli), a music student and the campus hockey star, who start fake tutoring/fake dating before everything turns into the ‘peak’ storyline.

So why has it gathered so much hype, so quickly? Usually, shows aimed at younger audiences get treated like ‘guilty pleasures’, but ‘Off Campus’ has actually been getting solid reviews from critics around the world.

Collider said the show leaves audiences “clamouring to return to Briar U as soon as possible,” while The Guardian praised it for having “genuine wit and warmth” instead of feeling like a lazy romance cash-grab.

Even critics who weren’t fully sold admitted the show knows exactly what it’s doing. Variety said,

“Additionally, seeing the friendships, not only between Hannah and her best friend, Allie Hayes (Mika Abdalla), but also among the male characters, sets the show apart. Garrett and his buddies, Logan (Antonio Cipriano), Tucker (Jalen Thomas Brooks) and Dean (Stephen Kalyn) are hockey players and frat bros, yet they aren’t the brainless meatheads typically depicted in this genre.

They have challenging conversations and express themselves, showing the importance of bonds between men.

Basically: Hot hockey players + slow burn romance + trauma + banter + found family + “he falls first” energy = massive hit.

So let’s be so for real, we were always going to eat this up.

Amazon MGM Studios definitely knows they’ve struck gold here, too. Peter Friedlander, the Head of Global TV, literally said:

“Obsession is officially in session at Prime Video, thanks to the fans who have embraced ‘Off Campus’.

"We couldn’t be happier to see such a passionate community come together around Season 1 of creator Louisa Levy and co-showrunner Gina Fattore’s interpretation of Elle Kennedy’s beloved story. When you earn trust and deliver for an audience, they show up, and they’ve certainly done so for ‘Off Campus.'”

Now the real question is whether Prime Video can keep the momentum going for future seasons, because the original series still has multiple books left to adapt, and fans are already demanding all of them immediately.

Especially me, who’s watched season one three times already.

One thing’s for sure, though: ‘Off Campus’ isn’t just another romance show. It’s officially entered its cultural phenomenon era.

The official 'Off Campus' playlist is now available to stream on rova now.
