New Zealand’s most popular baby names for 2025 have just been revealed on SmartStart, and parents across the motu have chosen more familiar common names than unique ones.

For the third consecutive year, Noah takes out the top spot for boys, with 244 names registered in 2025.

Luca wasn’t far behind, showing up as the second most popular boys’ name.

On the girls’ side, Isla stayed strong at number one with 179 babies given the name, continuing a run where it’s been in the top three every year since 2016. Charlotte was a close second with 178 baby girls named.

Internal Affairs Minister Brooke van Velden says the data shows Kiwi parents want names that stand the test of time, but still express individuality.

"With over 58,000 births registered this year and 19,457 unique first names, it’s clear that while parents love individuality, established names like Noah and Isla continue to dominate," she told 1News.
