A New Zealand search and rescue dog and handler faced a scary and almost fatal accident while searching for a missing man in Waiotapu, Rotorua.
During the search last week, soft ground gave way under German Shepherd Teo, causing her to fall into scalding water.
Luckily, Senior Constable Adam acted fast, pulling Teo out immediately, and she was rushed to Massey University Veterinary Hospital in Palmerston North.
In an update on Facebook, New Zealand Police wrote: “She underwent surgery to burns, mainly on her hindquarters, on Monday, and the prognosis is said to be good.”
“Due to the nature of the terrain, Teo had been wearing protective booties, preventing severe burns to the pads on her feet.”
Adam also suffered minor burns himself during the rescue, but has made sure to be by Teo’s side since the accident.
Commissioner Richard Chambers and Inspector Todd Southall (National Coordinator Police Dogs) confirmed they visited Teo and Adam after the surgery.
“She’s making good recovery, but it will be a long road,” Todd said. “While we are hopeful for her recovery, our thoughts are with the family of the missing man as the search continues.”
Comments from Kiwis have been full of support and best wishes for Teo.
“I hope the man is found safe and well, but it comes as a very stark reminder that our police put their lives on the line every day for us, and we should remember this whenever we deal with them, one person wrote.
They are just doing their job and hoping to make it home to their loved ones.
“Oh, Jesus. That's horrific,” said another. “How stressful for all involved. Recover well, pup and partner. ❤️”
A third added: “Adam and Teo, thank you so much for your service and dedication. Teo is beautiful, and I'm so pleased you were right there to save and help her, Adam. Much love to you both, and I wish Teo a speedy recovery. You are both heroes, xox.”
Teo and Adam have been a team since graduating together in October 2018. Teo retired from operational patrol duties earlier this year after an award-winning career, but has continued in Search and Rescue.
She was due to fully retire soon and live with Adam and his family.
A huge shoutout goes to the Massey team for giving Teo the best care possible, and many people are praying for the safe search of the missing man.
