With grocery prices through the roof and everyone feeling the pinch, a new app that's landed in Aotearoa could take the pressure off next time you need a little treat.
Too Good To Go is a Danish-born food rescue platform that's just added New Zealand as the 20th country its operating in, starting with Auckland.
The app is designed to connect hungry Kiwis with cafés, bakeries and restaurants offering up discounted 'Surprise Bags' of perfectly good food that would otherwise go in the bin.
It’s meant to be a win-win-win: Cheap eats for customers, local businesses make a few extra bucks on leftovers, and everyone cuts down on food waste.

Over 60 Auckland spots have already signed on - including local faves like Daily Bread, Crave Café, Rollers Bakery, Catroux and Beabeas, alongside big names like Bakers Delight, Muffin Break and Roll’d.
To see how it works, Too Good To Go sent over a voucher for me to order a surprise bag, and I chose one from Daily Bread. You gotta be quick, first thing in the morning as lots of these offers sell out - but you don't usually pick them up until the end of the day.
My surprise bag cost $9.99, and I got two hazelnut croissants, one ham and cheese and one savoury scone. Considering one croissant usually costs $9, it's definitely a bargain. The app showed me I saved $20 and avoided 3kg of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to 598 full smartphone charges, 10 cups of hot coffee or 9 minutes of hot showering.
Am I feeling a bit smug? Yes, yes, I am.

I had the ham and cheese croissant for breakfast, treated my flatmates to the hazelnut croissants, and had the scone to spare for the next day.
Globally, around 40% of all food produced ends up wasted - about 2.5 billion tonnes every year, according to WWF. Here at home, that adds up to $3 billion worth of food a year, which is a lot of kai going to landfill (and a lot of money going with it).
The app is free, and pretty easy to use - you just browse through stores near you with surplus food, reserve your surprise bag, pay via the app and collect in store at a set time.
The only thing to note is you won't know what you're gonna get (hence the 'surprise'), and therefore it might not be the best option for people with allergies and dietary restrictions.
If you're outside of Tāmaki Makaurau, never fear - To Good To Go is set to expand to other cities across NZ next year.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got a savoury scone that's calling my name.
