The most popular car for budget-conscious Kiwis has been revealed - and it’s a longstanding favourite.

The Toyota Corolla remains the top choice for first cars, budget-friendly driving, and dependability, according to the latest insights from Trade Me.

It’s been popular on NZ roads for good reason.

Head of Motors at Trade Me, Brendan Hall, says it comes down to “buyers knowing that with a Corolla, they’re getting a bulletproof engine, excellent fuel economy, and cheap parts if anything does need fixing. It’s the ultimate peace-of-mind purchase.”

‘Cause we all know how much a bill at the mechanics can pinch right now…

But while the Toyota Corolla dominates on a national level, around the motu there’s a shift in preference.

In Auckland and Hawke’s Bay, the Suzuki Swift actually beats out the Corolla as the most enquired-about car - largely because it’s easier to park (FAIR).

Down south, Otago locals prefer to get behind the wheel of a Subaru Legacy - a choice that makes sense given the region’s mountainous terrain and ski season travel.

The Toyota Hilux takes the number one spot for budget-friendly choice on Gizzy roads, while the Toyota RAV4 dominates in Marlborough.

“It’s fascinating to see how local geography dictates what buyers are looking for,” Hall says. “Even on a strict $5,000 budget, Kiwis are highly practical."

Top 10 most enquired-about vehicles nationwide under $5,000 (estimated value):

  1. Toyota Corolla | $3,152

  2. Suzuki Swift | $3,590

  3. Nissan Tiida | $3,531

  4. Mazda Demio | $3,593

  5. Honda Fit | $3,430

  6. Mazda Axela | $3,484

  7. Volkswagen Golf | $2,946

  8. Subaru Legacy | $3,041

  9. Nissan Leaf | $3,509

  10. Toyota Vitz | $3,360

So, if you’re currently cruising around in one of these or in the market for new wheels, you’ve got some reassurance you’re not doing too much damage to your wallet.
