The Warriors’ women have marked their return to the NRLW with a strong 14 - 0 win over the Parramatta Eels - and an even more powerful post-match moment in the sheds.
After securing their first victory of the season in front of an over 10,000-person crowd at Mt Smart Stadium, the team celebrated the way we know the Warriors club do best.
They erupted into the iconic ‘We are the Warriors, 100%’ chant, complete with the sprigs of their boots slamming down on the plastic red bin.
The energy in the sheds said it all – and they’d definitely earned it.
“That moment will be etched in their minds forever; it'll go down in history. Special times at the Warriors,” NRLW Head Coach Ron Griffiths said post-match.
Fans were quick to share how much they backed the gals too, with one commenter writing: “My daughter insisted we went to Mt Smart early to watch this game and she wasn't disappointed. Thank you, wāhine toa 💪.”
“Dangerous day to be a wheelie bin in Penrose 😍😍,” More FM’s Lana Searle added.
A third supporter wrote: “Keep playing like that and we'll need a few bins!!!”
For Winger Michaela Brake (née Blyde), the win was about more than just the score at the end of the 70-minute match.
"Now we are back, we need to stamp our mark on history and make sure young girls and boys are aware of who we are and what we can do, so they aspire to be us one day,” she said.
It's such an honour to have that responsibility, it's important we are the role models those girls look up to.
After seeing a success like that, it’s hard to see why any young sports fan wouldn’t look up to these wāhine toa.
