The All Blacks have announced their squad for the upcoming Rugby Championship clashes against Argentina, South Africa, and Australia, and it includes a few exciting new names in the mix.
Among them is Simon Parker, the Chiefs' loose forward who had a standout season in this year’s Super Rugby Pacific.
With the Bunnings NPC currently underway, Parker has been in camp with his regional side, the Northland Taniwha. On hearing the news of his All Blacks selection, his Northland teammates marked the moment in the most fitting way with a powerful haka in his honour.
In a video shared on Northland Rugby’s social media, the caption read: “Tanis showing support for Simon after he’s named in the All Blacks squad.”
Simon’s family were quick to flood the comments with pride, with one writing: “Too much, cuzzy Simon Parker. Bet Nana’s up there doing her own haka, proud as. We’re all proud of you.”
Simon’s dad had one of the most relaxed responses, saying: “Pretty cool, isn’t it?” As if he doubted his son’s abilities for a second? Pshh.
A Taniwha fan commented: “That's so inspiring for our Northland boys and girls!!!! Meaaaaan, Simon.”
Fellow Northland Taniwha player Sam Nock kept it short but powerful: “That’s our Rangatira” (Māori for chief).
Simon Parker is Northland Rugby Union's first All Black since Jack Goodhue, who last played for the team in 2020.
All Blacks coach Scott Robertson says the phone call with Parker was “emotional” and he was “really pleased” to welcome the newcomer to the squad.
‘Razor’ revealed Parker will still feature this weekend for his beloved Northland team, saying: “He obviously likes playing for the Taniwha.”
Parker is joined by fellow newcomers Tevita Mafileo, Kyle Preston, and Leroy Carter, who have been called in as injury replacements.
