Featured Guest: Nicky Styris

Sports journalist and commentator Nicky Styris sat down with Mike to reflect on her career, from her early days as an athlete to her journey through broadcasting.

Nicky is a proud former member of the New Zealand Trampoline Team. She credits the sport with building her strength, confidence and lifelong love of fitness.

Her media journey began behind the scenes at TVNZ before taking off with Sky Sport, where she found her niche in sports presenting.

After losing her job at Newshub, Nicky has now started a new chapter doing work as an MC.

“I knew eventually opportunities would arrive because I’ve done the hard work,” said Nicky.

She discussed the emotional impact of a career shift in her fifties and the importance of self-worth, resilience and staying active both mentally and physically.

“You have to start believing in yourself,” she said.

Featured Guest: Wendy Bremner

GM of Coeliac New Zealand Wendy Bremner joined Mike to shed light on coeliac disease.

Coeliac disease affects an estimated 100,000 New Zealanders, including around 30,000 children, yet many remain undiagnosed.

Wendy explained coeliac disease is an autoimmune response to dietary gluten, damaging the gut and preventing nutrient absorption.

Symptoms range from digestive issues to fatigue, skin problems and mental health impacts. The only treatment is a strict, gluten-free diet which can be difficult to manage due to the risks of cross-contamination.

Coeliac New Zealand offers resources, support and an online risk test. Head to coeliac.org.nz for more information.

Featured Guest: Mandy Evans

Ahead of this year’s Daffodil Day happening on 29th August, Mandy Evans from the Cancer Society sat down to talk about the importance of the event, which funds vital cancer services, research and advocacy.

Mandy spoke about the Society’s wide-ranging support, from transport and accommodation to counselling.

With no government funding, community involvement is crucial, especially as cancer rates rise with it now affecting four in ten New Zealanders.

Resident Pharmacist: Piyara Perera

This week Piyara explained the key differences between probiotics and prebiotics, and how they work together to support gut health.

Probiotics are live beneficial bacteria, otherwise known as ‘the good bugs’, while prebiotics are non-digestible fibres that feed them. Think of probiotics as seeds and prebiotics as the fertiliser.

When choosing a probiotic, look for specific strains tailored to your needs. Prebiotics can be found in foods like garlic, leeks, bananas and oats, but should be introduced slowly to avoid bloating.

For personalised advice, Piyara recommended speaking with a pharmacist.

Listen to our extended chat with Nicky Styris here and tune in next Sunday for The House of Wellness on The Breeze.
