This may come as a surprise to the rest of New Zealand but Christchurch has been named the 'Happiest City in NZ'
Researchers from a London-based institute called Quality of Life, have created a '2024 Happy City Index' list of the world's happiest cities, with Christchurch being the only New Zealand city to feature.
So how did Christchurch make the cut? The research is based on a few things including education, economy, mobility, and access to green areas.
Despite damage from the Earthquake lingering in some parts, Christchurch has emerged with a modern charm, plenty of space, and easy access to nature, all no doubt contributing to its high happiness score.
Some locals were surprised Christchurch received such a title, commenting on our More FM Canterbury Facebook page saying "Has he been here lol"
"Can't imagine why" another added.
One person questioned whether the researchers were confused with a different city that is located in the UK, also called Christchurch.
In a Reddit thread, one person supported the title, explaining "Having lived in Wellington for three times as long as I have been here (Christchurch). It's much easier to be happy here" going on to say "The ease of access to the activities, I like and the more settled weather"
Other Cantabrians who were still passionate about their hometown commented on our Facebook page saying "The support services are great. The people overall have been nothing but friendly and welcoming.
While we didn't have Christchurch being the happiest place to live in New Zealand on our 2024 bingo card, we're here for it.
Across the globe, Aarhus in Denmark took the top spot, with Brisbane leading the charge as Australia's happiest city coming in 21st.
