Kiwis are torn over a new bag of chips and it’s not because of the crunch... It’s the flavour people are seriously questioning.
A sausage sizzle sounds quintessentially Kiwi, right?! So why is the new flavour copping so much heat?
“This is just getting ridiculous,” one NZ redditor is fuming in a post.
Others agreed the endless release of new chip flavours is starting to get a bit out of hand.
One opinionated user wrote: “Why do they forever keep bringing out more and more chip flavours and they're all remarkably sh**?”
“Looks like it has mustard flavour, which is just wrong,” said another.
“Next thing you know, they'll be making broccoli flavoured chips,” added a third.
The outrage feels a bit dramatic considering the humble snag is basically a staple of supermarkets, Bunnings and Mitre 10 trips here in Aotearoa... it's nothing out of the ordinary.
Luckily, a few Kiwis came to its defence. “I quite like how they do this," one person wrote. "It obviously works because I hardly ever buy chips - but this kind of stuff I will buy.”
“That looks like a reasonable chip flavour to me. What’s the problem?” another asked.
And a third mentioned: “Not at Lamington? This right here, sausage sizzle flavour, which actually sounds reasonable to me - THIS is where you draw the line?”
Back in 2020, Bluebird dropped their infamous Lamington chips - their own take on making a chip flavour as Kiwi as ever.
Though the sweet and savoury combo was extremely polarising at the time, with one Kiwi telling TVNZ’s ‘Breakfast’: “It's like if you took a lamington and left it in a cupboard for maybe three weeks, and then you smashed it down and turned it into chips and put it in a packet.”
If there's one thing we can say, it's we're very staunch on our love for our chippies here in NZ. It'll be very interesting to see the hot takes on this latest flavour once more Kiwis get their hands on them.
