A specialist infant formula sold in New Zealand has been recalled after it was found to potentially contain a toxin that could make babies sick.
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has issued a warning about Alfamino 400g infant formula (0–12 months), which is used for babies with milk allergies. Certain batches may contain cereulide, a toxin produced by Bacillus cereus bacteria.
Cereulide can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, and unusual tiredness, especially in infants. While no illnesses have been reported in New Zealand, authorities say it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Affected batches have the following use-by dates and batch numbers:
51070017Y2 – 17.04.2027
51080017Y1 – 18.04.2027
51480017Y3 – 28.05.2027
51490017Y1 – 29.05.2027
52030017Y1 – 22.07.2027
Note: This recall does not affect any other Nestlé brand products in New Zealand.
MPI has also noted that Cereulide toxin is extremely heat-resistant, so preparing the formula with hot water would not eliminate it.
These were mainly supplied through hospitals, pharmacies, and GPs, but a few may have been purchased online or over the counter.
The Ministry says anyone who has these products should stop using them immediately. Parents can return them to the store they were purchased from for a refund, or speak with a GP or pharmacist about alternatives.
If your baby has consumed the formula and shows vomiting, diarrhoea, or unusual drowsiness, contact your GP or call Healthline on 0800 611 116.
