Crowded House and Split Enz musician Neil Finn has bought one of Auckland’s most controversial pubs - with big plans to flip the building's reputation on its head.

Finn’s assistant confirmed to RNZ that he’s bought Edinburgh Castle property in central Auckland, which sits around the corner from Roundhead Studios - which he’s owned for more than 20 years.

With the purchase, and his wife’s business, Sharondelier, sitting next door, Finn owns a good chunk of the block.

And he reportedly plans to completely switch up the reputation of the building, flipping it into a wellness centre.

The Edinburgh Castle pub has become infamous for its violent history.

The Eden Terrace location has been linked to multiple incidents, including the tragic manslaughter of the up-and-coming MMA fighter Fau Vake in 2021

According to a 2025 Stuff report, the pub gave up its right to sell alcohol in 2024 after receiving a whopping 162 police complaints, a kidnapping, a stabbing, two unsuccessful stabbings, an aggravated robbery and a nunchuck attack.

There aren’t many details on Finn's plans for the pub, but the idea to focus on wellbeing is already getting a positive reaction.

Owners of The French Cafe, directly across from Edinburgh Castle, said they are excited to see the Kiwi musician take over the pub.

“The site has had its challenges over the years, so a concept centred on wellbeing, connection and a more considered use of the space is a welcome change,” they told RNZ.

We see this as a great addition, something that will contribute positively to the energy, safety and overall appeal of the neighbourhood.

According to the Spinoff, others nearby are also reportedly “buzzing” about the change of ownership.

Finn, who’s currently on tour around the country with Split Enz, hasn’t publicly commented on his new purchase.

So for now, we’ll have to wait and see what this transformation will look like.
