Kalyn Ponga is available to play for the Kiwis at this year’s Rugby League World Cup.
The International Rugby League board has approved the star fullback's application to switch allegiance from Australia to New Zealand.
The 27 year-old had previously played for the Kangaroos at a Nines tournament in 2019, making him ineligible for the Kiwis.
In a statement, Ponga says his allegiance lies with New Zealand.
"While I was born in Australia, my connection to New Zealand runs deep through every generation of my family,” Ponga says.
My roots, my whakapapa, and my identity are firmly grounded in this country and its people.
"I want to be transparent about my representative history at the Australian level,” Ponga adds.
“My only appearances for Australia were in the Junior Kangaroos and the Rugby League World 9's, both in 2019. These were appearances I am grateful for; however, upon reflection, they do not reflect where my heart, my heritage, and my deepest sense of belonging truly lie."
Recent changes to State of Origin eligibility rules have opened the door for Ponga to explore the switch, with New Zealanders now able to play for Queensland or New South Wales if they fit the criteria.
The player was born in New South Wales or Queensland; or
The player resided in New South Wales or Queensland prior to their 13th birthday; or
The player's father played State of Origin.
With Ponga fitting the above criteria, he can now play for New Zealand and still represent Queensland.
The Newcastle Knights captain was born in Western Australia to Kiwi parents and spent time growing up in New Zealand before the family moved to Queensland.
Ponga’s switch is likely to see him lining up for the Kiwis in a blockbusting opening match of this year’s Rugby League World Cup against the Kangaroos at Allianz Stadium in Sydney on October 15th.
