'Modern Day Body-Icon' Lizzo opens up about creating a new beauty standard

"There was no Lizzo before Lizzo"

Body positivity queen Lizzo, has given insight into her path to success in an interview with People Magazine.

Lizzo - who is the face of the magazine's 'Women Changing the World' issue - discussed how her body so often becomes a topic of conversation. "Okay, we all know I'm fat. It doesn't bother me. I like being fat, and I'm beautiful and I'm healthy. So can we move on?"

When she was growing up, her parents told her the truth about the 'black experience', "Black parents have this responsibility to let their children know what can happen. They taught me at a very young age how America treats Black people. How it treats Black women. And I saw very quickly how we treat fat people."

"It may not be one person's ideal body type just like, say, Kim Kardashian might not be someone's ideal, but she's a body icon and has created a modern-day beauty standard,"

"And what I'm doing is stepping into my confidence and my power to create my own beauty standard. And one day that will just be the standard."

When asked about her road to success, she said "I had to blaze a trail, there was no Lizzo before Lizzo."

Back in October 2021, Lizzo did a Ted Talk on the history of twerking and how it taught her self-love where she reveals that she used to hate her body but has now learnt to embrace it.

Lizzo explained that she couldn't find any backup dancers that 'looked like her' which inspired her to create a TV show to find them.

"Girls that look like me don't get representation," the twerking connoisseur says in the trailer. "Time to pull up my sleeves and find them myself."

Lizzo's new TV series 'Lizzo's Watch out for the Big Grrrls' is set to arrive to Amazon Prime on March 25th. Watch the trailer below:
