Mike Puru's ultimate Auckland weekend guide with a night at the theatre

From sorting an outfit to a pre-show cocktail - Mike's got you covered!

The iconic musical 'Priscilla: Queen of the Desert' is about to open at Tāmaki Makarau's Civic Theatre, so what better excuse could there be to get your glad rags on and plan a fab night out?

We asked Mike Puru about his favourite spots in the city, and he didn't disappoint. From finding a fab outfit, to grabbing a pre-show cocktail and even brunching the next day, with these recommendations, you'll be all set for a whirlwind weekend.

Shopping

"The best place for a glam outfit is the Mercy Hospice Shop on Ponsonby Road. It’s always got a great selection of preloved clothes. Then, to jazz it up a bit with something fancy, head to Superette on Ponsonby Road.

If you’re closer to downtown, you can always head to Commercial Bay for more international and luxury brands."

Entertainment

"Seeing 'Priscilla: Queen of the Desert' in such a beautiful theatre like The Civic is a moment you won't want to miss. I've seen the stage version once before, and the story of discovery never ages.

"This show takes you to another world of love, drama and relationships, and helps people understand the lives of others. At a time when everything is a little chaotic, give yourself a break from it all and enjoy the little things in life that matter."

Eating and Drinking

"If you are looking for a classic steak-house experience, next to The Civic is Tony’s Steakhouse. It's an institution in Auckland! If you want more than steak, then I highly recommend visiting Commercial Bay and Britomart, which are full of amazing restaurants and food options for all budgets.

"For a pre-show drink, Queens Rooftop is a great cocktail spot. There's nothing more spectacular than a fresh cocktail while overlooking the harbour and the city, with incredible views. Starks at The Civic is also an ideal place if you don't have the time to venture far before 'Priscilla: Queen Of The Desert' and they will always have a themed drink when there is a show on.

"After the show, you'll likely be wanting to debrief, so perhaps head to The Tinted Rose on Ponsonby Road. The Glass Goose in Federal Street is also a great after-show venue."

"For brunch the next day, head to Rushworth Cafe in Wynyard Quarter if you want sea views and a great coffee. There is also Honey Sundays on Jervois Road and First Mate Last Laugh under the Auckland Harbour Bridge. With lots of runners, cyclists and dog-walkers going past, you can people-watch while having some delicious food and making plans for the next show!

Must-see Attractions

"I’ve had family up from the South Island recently, and there’s no shortage of great spots. A drive up Mount Eden, a ferry over to Devonport, Auckland War Memorial Museum, a walk along the famous Karangahape Road… but the Viaduct Harbour, Commercial Bay and Queen Street are the must-go-to spots.

It's pedestrian-friendly, and the little side streets offer some great shopping and eateries. Before you know it, you'll be standing outside Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, which is always a good place for visitors.

If you are here for a show at The Civic, you can make a whole afternoon out of it - or why not stay a while? The Mövenpick Hotel Auckland is perfect - close to the city’s waterfront and shopping districts, plus… ice cream!
