To celebrate Father’s Day, it’s all about men’s mental health on The House of Wellness with Chemist Warehouse on The Breeze. Join Mike as he chats to former TV presenter and news reporter Mike McRoberts, men’s wellness coach Carl Muir, CEO of the Mental Health Foundation Shaun Robinson, resident GP Dr. John and resident pharmacist Piyara Perera.
Featured Guest: Mike McRoberts
Once a daily visitor to all of our homes as a reporter and news anchor, Mike McRoberts joined the show to reflect on family, career and his personal journey of identity.
After nearly three decades on Kiwi screens, Mike has moved into a new chapter as Te Ao Māori editor at the National Business Review, MC, and now author of his book ‘Speaking My Language’.
The book, that builds on his documentary ‘Kia Ora, Good Evening’, follows Mike as he immerses himself in te ao Māori, learns te reo and the impact it has had on his sense of belonging, wellness and resilience.
Mike said that he “needed” to go on this journey and hopes the book will be an “invitation for those who are wanting to start their journeys” or those who want to reconnect.
“I felt like it was missing in my life,” Mike admitted.
“It’s not a second language, it’s our language.”
Featured Guest: Carl Muir
Men’s wellness coach Carl Muir sat down to talk about ‘The Provider’, a platform he has created to help Men’s wellbeing and mental health.
Inspired by the loss of his father to cancer, his own mental health struggles and the lack of dedicated spaces for men, Carl created a four-day programme where participants can switch off from technology, share stories without judgement and immerse themselves in the outdoors.
Combining kai, conversation and connection, the retreats address themes of burnout, grief, childhood trauma and the weight of responsibility many men carry, all while encouraging healthier choices, openness and the opportunity to reconnect.
Featured Guest: Shaun Robinson
Mental Health Foundation CEO Shaun Robinson sat down to celebrate a record-breaking charity drive with Chemist Warehouse which raised a whopping $451,000 across June and July.
The funds will largely go toward upgrading the foundation’s digital resources, making vital mental health information more accessible to the growing number of people seeking support.
Shaun praised the generosity of New Zealanders, calling the campaign a “true game-changer” for lifting the nation’s mental health.
Resident GP: Dr. John
This week, Carolyn and Dr. John sat down to discuss the challenges around men’s health.
Dr. John highlighted that unlike women, who often build consistent relationships with their doctors through life stages, men tend to avoid healthcare until something serious arises - sometimes hiding their real concerns until the end of an appointment.
He stressed the importance of awareness around lifestyle factors, unexplained weight loss, bleeding, chest pain or skin changes, as well as shifts in mood, motivation and enjoyment of life.
Dr. John noted that mental health red flags often reveal themselves through the loss of interest in things once enjoyed and encouraged addressing symptoms as they arise, instead of waiting until problems escalate.
Resident Pharmacist: Piyara Perera
This week, Piyara shared insights into the ‘superstar ingredients’ that deliver real results for different skin concerns.
For dry or dehydrated skin, she recommends humectants like hyaluronic acid, vitamin B5, and glycerin to plump, smooth and lock in moisture.
When it comes to anti-aging, retinol stands out for boosting collagen and cell turnover, while vitamin C brightens and evens tone, and niacinamide strengthens the skin barrier, reduces redness and fades pigmentation.
Above all, Piyara stressed the ultimate anti-aging essential is daily sunscreen.
