Michael B. Jordan has encouraged his fellow creatives to "dream big" and "be kind" following his Best Actor Oscar win on Sunday.

The Sinners star beat fellow nominees Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke and Wagner Moura to win the Best Actor Academy Award for his portrayal of twins Smoke and Stack in Ryan Coogler's supernatural thriller.

Speaking to reporters backstage in the press room after his win, Jordan was asked what his victory should signify to rising creatives and he replied, "My father always told me, 'Don't expect anything to be handed to you. You do the work, and everything else is gonna figure itself out.'"

According to the clip posted on social media by MTV UK, the Creed actor acknowledged that the Oscar represents the "pinnacle" of his industry and therefore creates a sense of "competitiveness" about winning one.

He continued, "(But) at the same time, what's for you is for you, and you can't take anybody's blessings away from anybody else. I'm just walking my path, man, and just trying to be locked in."

As for his advice to rising creatives, he said, "I would encourage other actors and other artists, no matter what their medium is, to try to keep that in mind. To be honest and truthful. Dream big, man. Dream big, and be kind, bro, be honest. I'm really big on like pouring into the universe and universe is going to pour it back into you, and that's how I try to live."

During his acceptance speech at Sunday's ceremony, the Black Panther star named Black performers who won an Oscar before him.

"I stand here because of the people that came before me: Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker and Will Smith," he told the audience. "To be amongst those giants, amongst those greats, amongst my ancestors, amongst my guys. Thank you everybody in this room and everybody at home for supporting me over my career. I feel it."
