Metallica raised a few eyebrows in Cardiff, Wales on Sunday night after Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo slipped a performance of a banned song into the band's latest stadium show.

It wasn't some deep-cut Metallica track or a rebellious punk anthem. It was Tom Jones' Delilah.

As part of their nightly "doodle", where Hammett and Trujillo jam a song tied to the city they're playing in, the pair launched into the Welsh classic after Fuel. For most places it'd be a harmless local tribute, but not in Cardiff.

Delilah was once a staple at Welsh rugby matches, with thousands of fans singing it inside Principality Stadium. But the song was pulled from stadium playlists in 2015 because of its lyrics, which tell the story of a jealous man murdering his partner.

The ban became official in 2023, when Principality Stadium requested choirs and performers stop playing it altogether during rugby internationals.

At the time, a stadium spokesperson said: "'Delilah' will not feature on the playlist for choirs for rugby internationals at Principality Stadium. Guest choirs have also more recently been requested not to feature the song during their pre-match performances and throughout games."

Whether it was a cheeky wink to Welsh fans or Metallica knowingly stirring the pot, the moment definitely got the crowd singing.
