After four rounds of intense chemotherapy, 11 weeks spent in hospital, countless blood transfusions, bone marrow biopsies, MRIs, x-rays and scans, Mel Homer has shared the incredible news that she will be getting a stem cell transplant.
Mel is the host of Breeze’s House of Wellness, as well as the woman behind the mic during the day shift on Breeze Classic (formerly Magic). In a shocking turn of events, she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia six months ago.
In July 2025, Mel went for some routine blood tests that came back “abnormal”. She went straight to the hospital and stayed there for five weeks, never getting to go home in between.
When Mel was last able to pop in, she told Breeze Drive host Mike Puru that the “ideal outcome” was to undergo a stem cell transplant, but that they were struggling to find someone who was a match.
Earlier this morning, she excitedly shared on her Instagram that her team has finally found a stem cell/bone marrow donor, and she will have a transplant next week.
“It’s all systems go for what will hopefully be the final (and successful) part of my acute myeloid leukaemia sh*tshow," she wrote.
“This chance of a cure is all thanks to a young woman in France - I don’t know any other details about her as the donor register is all about anonymity, but she is my hero.”
Mel went on to explain that by the end of the treatment, she will have this woman’s immune system and blood type.
“Stem cell transplants are a hard path, I am aware it will be brutal and make my 4 rounds of chemo look like a walk in the park,” she noted.
“I’ve had a raft check on my lungs, heart and teeth over the past couple of weeks, a very long education session on transplants and meetings with my doctor.”
“I have complete confidence in my amazing medical team, and I’m just so damn grateful I get this opportunity.”
Mel added that after the transplant, she will have 100 days of near isolation.
“My mum has lent me her walker (you’ll see me rollin'),” she joked, “and I’ll lose my hair and brows again, which are just sprouting back.”
“BUT this time next year I’ll be swimming in the ocean and dancing at a festival with actual people around!”
“That’s my goal, and I’m manifesting hard,” she said.
Mel thanked her circle of support, saying it had blown her mind.
What great news for the new year! We are so pleased for you, Mel and are wishing you all the best for your transplant.
