Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine is getting ready to drop the band’s final self-titled album this Friday, and he’s feeling a bit nostalgic about his old crew.
In a chat with Revolver, Mustaine opened up about his time in Metallica, and it sounds like the hatchet is well and truly buried.
Megadeth’s final tune on their record is actually a cover of Metallica’s ‘Ride The Lightning’. Mustaine, who has a co-writing credit on the original 1984 track, said recording it was his way of “closing the circle” and paying his respects.
Wasn’t a cheeky jab - phew.
"I really respect James [Hetfield’s] guitar playing," Mustaine said. "And I think that Lars [Ulrich] is a tremendous songwriter. I really did enjoy my time with them."
While he hasn’t heard from the boys since the cover was announced, and he doesn’t plan to, Mustaine reckons the best way to fix their rocky history is to hit the road together.
"I think what needs to happen is there needs to be a Megadeth/Metallica tour. Period. That would, I’m sure, make everything right," he said.
He confirmed that the rekindling of a friendship “wouldn’t bother me”.
“I just think because there was a lot of hurt and misunderstanding around our time together that it would be difficult not to keep bringing up the past,” he opened up with. “Rebuilding a relationship with somebody after you have so much history is really hard.”
He admitted that he is “pretty good at getting over grudges”, but is clearly leaving it up to the universe: “If it’s meant to be, I’m sure I’ll see those guys.”
The bands haven’t properly shared a stage since the legendary ‘Big Four’ shows back in 2010 and 2011.
With Megadeth heading into retirement after a massive three-year world tour kicking off in Feb, this might be the last chance for the two to team up.
Announcement coming late 2026, surely…?
