Amazon Prime Video has released the trailer for Matka King, a gripping period drama that transports viewers back to the high-stakes world of 1960s Bombay. The series features Vijay Varma in the lead role as Brij Bhatti, a sharp and determined cotton trader in post-Independence India. Driven by a desire for a better life and fueled by a bold idea, Bhatti sets out on a journey that will eventually see him transform into the architect of a massive gambling empire known as Matka.

The trailer showcases a fast-paced and layered narrative where Bhatti’s rise to power is marked by intense tension and rising stakes. What begins as a strategic move to improve his circumstances quickly snowballs into a complex web of consequences, highlighting the steep price of success. As his influence grows, so do the threats against him, leaving viewers to wonder whether his empire will continue to thrive or eventually collapse under the weight of its own ambition.

Lead actor Vijay Varma described the filming process as an exhilarating and challenging experience, noting the fulfillment he found in bringing a character to life against a historical backdrop he had never explored before. Varma emphasized that at its heart, the series is a universal story about the human drive for power and the personal sacrifices required to achieve it. He expressed his excitement for global audiences to engage with the intense narrative when the show premieres.

The series also delves into the complex lives of those surrounding Bhatti, including his wife Barkha, played by Sai Tamhankar. Tamhankar noted that while Barkha may appear to be a typical middle-class housewife, she is actually a forward-thinking and independent woman who carves her own path rather than living in her husband's shadow. Kritika Kamra, who plays another pivotal role, added that the show challenged her to explore themes of resilience and the intricate motivations behind her character’s choices.

Director Nagraj Popatrao Manjule aimed to create more than just a period drama, viewing the series as a story about a man fighting for respect and changing the entire ecosystem around him. To enhance the emotional journey of the characters, the production utilized period-accurate costumes, props, and lighting. Manjule collaborated with several production houses, including Roy Kapur Films and Prime Video, to ensure that every frame reflected the high-stakes tension inherent in the 1960s gambling scene.

Supported by a strong ensemble cast including Gulshan Grover, Siddharth Jadhav, and Jamie Lever, Matka King is set to offer a deep dive into the human relationships and personal journeys shaped by wealth and risk. Created and written by Abhay Koranne, the series is scheduled to premiere exclusively on Prime Video on April 17, reaching audiences in India and across 240 countries and territories worldwide.
