A Northland photographer has filmed some incredible scenes lurking in the Mangawhai bar waters.
Andy Bruce from Elevated Media captured a shiver of bronze whaler sharks in a clear and beautiful drone shot shared on Instagram.
“30 plus bronze whalers chilling out at the Mangawhai Bar this morning,” Bruce wrote on Tuesday.
Speaking with 1News, the Mangawhai local said he had known some sharks had been hanging around the sandbar.
"There was a massive bait ball of kahawai just outside the estuary, and they seemed to be keeping tabs on the sharks," he said.
At first, I thought it was 20 of them, then 25. Then I went a bit higher and I could see around 33…
Normally, the thought of 33 sharks swimming that close to shore would give us nightmares, but there’s something about the way Bruce captured the marine life that’s breathtaking in the most beautiful way.
Back in December Bruce shared another incredible clip, showing hundreds of kahawai circling the shallow waters, unexpectedly close to a bunch of bronze whalers.
“A huge bait ball of kahawai, just metres off the beach is circling tightly as bronze whalers lurk in the shallows,” Bruce captioned his Instagram post.
He reckons the school of fish are what likely attracted the sharks to congregate in Mangawhai bar.
“They seemed to be keeping tabs on the sharks," Bruce told 1News.
This might just be the largest number of sharks Bruce has captured so close to home - and we want more!!
