Southland Police have issued a stark warning after two people were targeted during meet-ups in the last week. In both reported incidents, they say offenders allegedly used dating apps to lure victims to secluded locations under the cover of darkness.
A person remains in critical care after being assaulted in the Queens Park area on Friday night. Two days later a second victim sustained serious injuries in another attack.
Southland Area Prevention Manager acting Inspector Mel Robertson said the offenders are specifically planning these encounters to cause serious harm.
“In both incidents reported to Police, it appears people are using these apps to lure people to secluded locations late at night with the intention to attack them,” Robertson said.
"Not only are they taking advantage of people’s trust, but they are planning these attacks with the intention to seriously injure these people,” she added.
Police are now urging anyone using dating platforms to prioritise their physical safety when moving from digital chats to real-world meetings. Robertson suggested that those arranging dates should always choose locations that are public or well-lit at night.
"We urge anybody who is planning to meet someone from a dating app to choose a location which is public," Robertson said, "as well as letting someone trusted know your plans and movements."
Investigators are working to identify and locate the alleged offenders. Police want to hear from anyone who was in the Queens Park area between 6pm and 4am from Friday, 8 May to Sunday, 10 May.
Anyone with information is being asked to contact Police via 105 or report it online.
