Lionel Richie checked himself into intensive care shortly after his performance in St Louis on Saturday.

TMZ is reporting that Richie is just being cautious and doctors are looking into possible dehydration.

The outlet reported the news of the Grammy winner's hospitalisation amid his Sing a Song All Night Long tour with Earth, Wind & Fire. During the show, he had asked his team to bring him a chair while performing his final song, All Night Long.

The American Idol judge previously cut a concert short in St Paul, Minnesota, on 24 June after falling ill on stage.

During that show, which was the first of his tour, Richie told the crowd he was feeling dizzy and performed Dancing on the Ceiling while seated, the Minnesota Star Tribune reported.

"When you're feeling dizzy, sit your ass down," he joked, before sitting down at a piano to perform Three Times a Lady and then taking an impromptu intermission.

Richie, who is dad to TV star Nicole Richie, postponed two shows in the aftermath of that incident, as his doctors advised he "rest and return to full health".

The star later assured fans he was "doing well" in an Instagram post.

"Thank you for every message, every kind word, and for all your love. I'm doing well, and I'm grateful for all of you," he shared.

Richie is next scheduled to perform on 26 September in San Francisco.
