Formula One’s Miami Grand Prix quickly turned into a nightmare for Liam Lawson.

On lap eight, the Kiwi driver's promising run ended in a collision that flipped the car of Pierre Gasly.

While battling for 10th position, Lawson suffered a critical lock-up at the Turn 17 hairpin.

Defending his spot with everything he had, the Racing Bulls driver moved into the outside lane.

However, his car clipped the rear of Gasly’s Alpine, a contact that had terrifying consequences.

The impact sent Gasly into a mid-air flip.

The Frenchman’s car briefly rested on its halo before slamming into the barrier.

Fortunately, the sport’s modern safety standards proved their worth.

Gasly emerged from the wreckage unhurt, though the incident triggered an immediate safety car period.

Lawson managed to limp his battered car back to the pits, but the damage was too severe.

His team was forced to retire the car, marking a scoreless weekend for the New Zealander.

The early stages of the race were plagued by carnage.

Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar also crashed out at Turn 14, adding to a messy start for the grid.

Despite the drama, 19-year-old Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli showed veteran composure.

He converted his pole position into a brilliant victory, fending off late-race pressure from a surging McLaren duo.

Lando Norris secured second place, while his teammate Oscar Piastri completed the podium in third.

For Lawson, the focus now shifts to the next race in Canada in a fortnight.
