DiCaprio, Scorsese begin production on What Happens at Night

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese have marked the start of production on their latest collaboration What Happens at Night.

The One Battle After Another actor, his frequent collaborator and executives at Apple Studios shared a first-look image of the psychological horror on Thursday to celebrate the start of principal photography in the Czech Republic.

The image shows DiCaprio and his co-star Jennifer Lawrence in costume walking down a snow-covered road, away from a car. DiCaprio sports the new moustache he was seen with at the 2026 Oscars on Sunday.

Based on the novel of the same name by Peter Cameron, What Happens at Night follows a married American couple who travel to a small, snowy European town to adopt a baby.

According to the book's synopsis, "Nothing is as it seems in this baffling, frozen world, and the more the couple struggles to claim their baby, the less they seem to know about their marriage, themselves and life itself."

The film will also star Patricia Clarkson, Mads Mikkelsen, Jared Harris and frequent Scorsese collaborator Welker White.

DiCaprio and Lawrence, who will also produce the movie alongside the famed director, previously worked together on the 2021 comedy Don't Look Up.

Meanwhile, What Happens at Night marks DiCaprio's seventh collaboration with Scorsese, following projects such as Killers of the Flower Moon, Gangs of New York, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Departed, and more.

During a recent conversation for Variety's Actors on Actors series, DiCaprio told Lawrence to expect Scorsese to give her a lot of film references to prepare for the shoot.

"They usually come in the form of a DVD. And if you don't have a DVD player, get one... he'll have screenings sometimes for just one sequence in a movie. If there's something that he wants you to capture from an old film or the pacing of something, you might have a screening of a whole film just for a specific scene that he wants to see," he shared.

What Happens at Night does not yet have a release date.
