Money

Legit or a scam? We looked into the ShopBack app that pays you for spending online

Getting cash back for filling up the cart at Chemist Warehouse seems too good to be true.

If you’ve seen anything about this new app called ShopBack and have thought, ‘hang on, why are they giving me free money just for shopping?’ - same.

It kinda sounds a bit scammy, right? But after a proper stalk, here’s the real tea: ShopBack actually is legit, but there are some catches. Here's what you need to know.

Basically, when you shop through the app at stores like Chemist Warehouse, Sephora, Glassons (and loads more), ShopBack gets a commission from the brand, and they pass a chunk of that commission back to you.

Depending on the store, you’ll usually get somewhere between 1% to 30% cash back.

Most fashion and beauty brands sit around the 1-10% mark, while travel sites like Booking.com can sometimes offer higher rewards.

It’s not gonna make you a millionaire overnight - but it sounds like it may add up over time, especially if you’re already doing the shopping anyway.

BUT (and it’s important you know this) I looked through their T’s and C’s and found:

  • They track your purchases to make sure you actually spent the money.

  • Your data is covered under their Privacy Policy (which you agree to when you sign up)

  • They don’t guarantee 100% privacy, meaning your info could be used for marketing or shared under certain conditions.

But hey, at least now you know. You’re not getting free cash for nothing, you’re trading a bit of your shopping info.

If you’re cool with that, it’s honestly a pretty sweet way to get money back on things you were going to buy anyway.

Just a heads up though: I’d only use it for stuff you were already planning to get, otherwise it’s way too easy to fall into that unnecessary spending trap we all know (and feel guilty about five minutes later).
