Kmart NZ issues urgent recall over self-activating product injury risk

"We take the quality and safety of our products very seriously."

Kmart NZ portable blenders - White, Blue, Green and Lilac

Kmart NZ has issued an urgent recall on a popular kitchen gadget, warning customers of a serious safety risk.

“At Kmart, we take the quality and safety of our products very seriously, which is why we would like to advise you of a product safety recall,” the store wrote on Instagram yesterday.

The product in question is the ‘ANKO Portable Blender’ which has been on shelves in four colourways - white, green, blue and lilac.

According to Kmart, the issue comes down to the base of the blender. If it’s accidentally immersed in water, the device may switch itself on without anyone pressing the ON/OFF button.

If the product becomes defective, Kmart note there could be “risk of serious injury, including laceration from the exposed blades, if the product self activates.”

All affected products were sold between January 1 and April 4, 2025, though Product Safety NZ says blenders sold in-store and online between 23 January 2025 to 3 September 2025.

So if you’ve grabbed one this year, it’s definitely worth double checking.

If you own or know someone who owns the product, Kmart advises “customers should immediately stop using the product and return it to the nearest store.”

If you’ve been gifted or bought one second hand, returns will be accepted whether you have your receipt or not.

Even if your blender hasn’t shown any faults, it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to sharp blades.
