Kmart NZ has issued an urgent recall on two of its popular Anko gel packs after discovering they may contain a toxic ingredient - and have done for seven years.
The store confirmed over the weekend that it’s recalling both the Anko Small Gel Pak and Anko Large Gel Pak, which have been sold in stores and online since June 2018.
According to Kmart, the gel packs may contain ethylene glycol instead of the non-toxic ingredient glycerol.
Ethylene glycol is extremely dangerous if ingested, and Kmart warns, “if packaging becomes damaged, ethylene glycol can leak out and if swallowed, can cause irreversible injuries or death.”
Customers are being urged to stop using the gel packs immediately and to keep them well out of reach of children and animals.
If you’ve got one in the freezer, it’s worth checking ASAP.
Kmart is offering a full refund to anyone who has bought either of the listed products, even if you no longer have the receipt.
The Anko Small Gel Pak was sold right up until December 24, 2025, while the large gel pack was available until December 21, 2024.
The recall is being overseen by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).
If you or someone in your household may have been exposed to the contents of the gel pack, seek medical advice immediately.
If you own one of these gel packs, don’t risk it - a refund is far better than a trip to A&E.
