A Kiwi Reddit user has shared a review of a $2 lolly mixture from the Meeanee Store in Napier - and honestly, it sounds like a bag worth tracking down.
“The Meeanee Store $2 presents an unabashed embarrassment of riches,” the reviewer wrote. “We got Coke bottles (non-sour type), strawberries and even one of those spinny top things that I love."
"I especially appreciate the exclusion of filler lollies (looking at you, mint leaf!) and even got to try something new to my palate in the form of the big blue sugary sour heart, which was an absolute winner.”
They did make one small critique, adding: “A caramel square or chocolate-type treat would have finished it off quite nicely… Oh, and the penguins are looking a little sad, but I do not blame the Meeanee store for that. Overall very satisfied customer, hell this could even be an early contender for mixture of the year!”
Other Redditors were quick to weigh in, with one calling it a “really solid mix”, pointing out that too many lolly bags these days are just “all gummies or all sours.”
Another said it had them feeling nostalgic, comparing it to a “decent 50c bag from the 90s”. Unfortunately, our beloved mix bags have not been safe from inflation.
Suggestions for improvement included the good ol’ classic milk bottles and spearmint leaves - for those with acquired taste buds.
“$4 can get [you] two packets from New World if you have [a] club card and maybe each packet has 20 lollies,” someone pointed out, suggesting we no longer waste our precious coins on such small bags.
Still, most agreed the Meeanee mix had the right balance of flavour and variety.
And while $2 doesn’t go as far as it used to, it seems some lolly mixtures still can deliver that same joy as they did in our childhoods.
Right, I’m off to the local dairy to track down a fierce competitor for this ‘mixture of the year’.
