Our very own Ryan Fox has done it again, pipping American Sam Burns after four playoff holes at the Canadian Open.
The 38-year-old got his first ever PGA Tour win at the Myrtle Beach classic a month ago, but he’ll likely be a little more stoked with this win, given it’s a full-field event.
Foxy comes away with just short of $3 million NZD, 500 FedEx Cup points, a spot at the US Open next week, a start at next year’s Players Championship, Masters and PGA Championship, as well as PGA Tour exemption through until the end of 2027.
Basically, he did really bloody well for himself.
He entered the fourth and final day sharing the lead, and hung around during the day, smashing a birdie on the 18th hole to send him to a sudden-death playoff.
The first three playoff holes couldn’t separate Fox and Burns, despite moving the pin location after the first two. They really kept the crowd, and all of us at home, on the edge of our seats.
On their second shots of the fourth hole, they both went for the same approach, except Fox drilled his to ten feet from the hole, while Burns’ shot was a fairer distance away.
Fox described this as “probably the best shot I’ve ever hit in my life”.
Burns couldn’t get it done in any less than par, and despite Fox missing the shot for an eagle finish, he drilled it from three feet for a birdie, and the win.
Talk about a down-to-the-wire finish.
Fox becomes just the second Kiwi to win the men's Canadian Open since Sir Bob Charles in 1968.
Can’t wait to cheer on Foxy once again next week!
