'They hated it!': NZ's Ella Monnery on singing for Joe Jonas, Kylie Jenner

"I actually am confused how we even got booked for that..."

Kiwi vocalist Ella Monnery is stepping into her solo era after performing epic shows alongside some of NZ's best EDM acts - but not all her gigs have been quite so fun.

On the release day of her new single 'Me, Myself and I', Ella sat down with rova to chat all things music, working with her rapper and producer boyfriend, Kings, her 'hot or not' predictions for this summer, and her best and worst overseas performances.

Having started her career singing at Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park back in 2018, Ella has been a part of Synthony, featured as a vocalist for Saachi, sung the national anthem at All Blacks games and much more. But there was one ill-fated show in Europe that left her mortified.

"The weirdest gig I did was in Greece. We were performing for the opening of a hotel, and then we found out it was like all celebrities. Joe Jonas was there. Kylie Minogue was there. One of the Jenner sisters was there, Like, it was out the gate," she said.

"They hated it. They absolutely hated it. Like they're not interested in a few New Zealanders coming over, going like [sings Sia song] 'I'm Bulletprooooof!'"

"I actually am confused how we even got booked for that in the first place, she added. "But they had their backs to us. We were just background music."

Not one to let an awkward performance kill her vibe, Ella is channelling a new level of confidence with 'Me, Myself and I', a "fun little EDM dance track" with "silky smooth vocals and an infectious beat".

"My goal was to make you feel something, but dance while you're at it," she said.

"It's for anyone who's ever let something or someone hold them back, to just kind of like be in your empowerment. Be unapologetically yourself, and just step into that light of being you and feeling good."
