A Kiwi bloke recently took to Reddit with a simple but important question for the lads: “How do you fellas keep yourselves sane and look after your mental health?”
It’s a conversation we need to keep having. In New Zealand, the stats are a tough watch - one in eight men will experience serious depression in their lifetime, and the suicide rate for men is three times that of women.
The replies were incredibly wholesome, with guys opening up about the hobbies and routines that keep them grounded.
One commenter shared his journey through depression and alcoholism, celebrating two months of being sober. The support from other blokes was strong, with replies calling him a “legend” and saying, “this Internet stranger is hella proud of you”.
When it came to the daily grind, one user kept it simple: “Move the body, get sunlight, stay nourished, stay hydrated, stimulate the mind, do things you enjoy, spend time with others, and get good sleep”.
Physical activity was a massive theme, with many agreeing that regular walking is the number one priority. Others mentioned that hitting the gym daily and listening to uplifting podcasts helped shift their mindset.
For some, it was about professional help or community. One bloke called having a psychologist a “game changer,” while another found strength in a regular men’s group.
One dude suggested “meditating with shadow work”, which involves 'shadowing' your thoughts as a third person - “to see life through a whole different perspective”.
There was plenty of the classic advice to stay off screens and nurture only positive relationships in your life.
The message here was clear: Looking after yourself isn't a sign of weakness, it's actually a sign of strength.
