If you are heading to Metallica tonight and want to kick things off properly, Auckland artist Matt Griffin has sorted you out. He's just finished an absolutely monstrous Metallica mural inside Eden Park and it is bloody sick.
Griffin is a self-taught realism artist, who went from structural engineering to hyperrealism art. His work has already blown up across galleries in Devonport and Parnell, and now he’s taken things to the home of tonight’s gig, Eden Park.
The mural itself is a full-send tribute. Think metallic-silver Metallica logo with James Hetfield holding up devil horns on either side, skull ring and all. It looks like something that should come with its own pyrotechnics.
Griffin shared the piece on Instagram earlier this week, writing, “Another mural etched in at Eden Park, this time for the iconic @metallica. This mural will be available to the public so if you want to come view the piece and get a snap before you head in, check my insta story for a map how to get there! YEOOOW!! 🤘🏼🤘🏼”
If you want to track it down, it’s tucked inside Eden Park’s Samsung South Stand on the Level 4 concourse, West Side, near Gate G.
Always cool seeing local talent getting showcased on a night this big. Get in early, grab the pic, then go lose your voice with the rest of us.
Make sure you’ve checked out our guide to everything you need to know before the gig tonight, and get in the draw to win a Limited Edition Auckland Vinyl of Metallica’s 72 Seasons, plus an M72 World Tour 2025 t-shirt.
